Susie Jane Stamper

Susie Jane McMillan Stamper, age 80, of Galax, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Dec. 20, 1927 in North Carolina to Arthur Field and Ruth Della Burchett McMillan.

She is survived by two daughters, Demmie Ruth Breeding and Ella Ruth Stoneman, both of Galax; two brothers, Joe Stamper and Charlie Stamper, both of Galax; two sisters, Rosie Upchurch of Pennsylvania and Virginia Holliway of Sparta; two brothers, Tommy W. McMillan of Pennsylvania and Joe McMillan of Sparta; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel in Galax with burial in Piney Creek cemetery. The Rev. Myron Dalton and the Rev. Sam Loggins officiated.

Bina Edwards Poole

Bina Edwards Poole, age 100, of Sparta, died Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was the widow of Beal Poole. She was born in Alleghany County on May 2, 1908 to the late Andrew J. and Betty Reeves Edwards. She graduated from high school and attended Appalachian State Teachers College. She taught school at Whitehead, Little Pine, Sparta and Zion. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James A. ?Jimmy? and Anna Sue Osborne Poole of Joppa, Md. and Ralph B. and Peggy Warden Poole of Hillsville, Va.; four grandchildren and spouses, Lynn and Philip Wilson of Kingsport, Tenn., Sondra and Robert Magness of Bel Air, Md., Lisa and Bob Berkebile of Jarrettsville, Md. and James A. Poole Jr.; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Nov. 22 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Sparta cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Little River Primitive Baptist Church, c/o Roger Lineberry, 82, Lineberry Lane, Sparta NC 28675.

Dwayne Murphy

E. Dwayne Murphy, age 70, of Independence, Va., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Park in Winston-Salem. He was the son of the late Click and Lorene Bedsaul Murphy. He is survived by his wife, Janie Cox Murphy; three daughters and a son-in-law, Diane and Gary Seagle of Boonville, Dwaynna Coleman and Michelle Smith, both of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Kelly Murphy of Independence; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Shelby and Dr. Bob Brice of Winston-Salem and Roaring Gap; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Wade and Patsy Murphy of Roaring Gap and Chris and Kathy Murphy of Sparta; his stepmother, Ola Mae Murphy of Sparta; a stepsister, Mary Collins of Winston-Salem; and his best friend, Rebel, his Jack Russell terrier.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Little Pine Church of the Brethren in Ennice with burial in the church cemetery. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Fisher Hyatt

Dorothy Fisher Hyatt, age 75, of Sparta and formerly of Hamptonville, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 2, 1933 in Buncombe County to the late Edward and Ada Fisher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward H

yatt; and her special ?mom? Aunt Sadie Riddle.

She is survived by her children and spouses, Pam and Gordon Myers of Hamptonville, Rick Hyatt, Martin Hyatt and Beth Parrish all of Sparta, Vickie and Gordon DeWitt, Marlene and Tracy Gilpin, all of Jonesville, Wanda Hangan and James Tolbert of Pennsylvania and Darlene and Steve Slawter of State Road; eight grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Brooke Castle, Jen and Brent Borkey, Justin Gilpin and Lindsay Collins, Brad Myers, Sandra and James Bauguess, Jessie Tolbert, Beth Gilpin and fianc? David Smoot and Andy Hyatt; an honorary granddaughter, Alli Ingram; four great-grandchildren, Timothy James Tolbert, Ryan Bauguess, Reagan Bauguess and Zara Mae Borkey; four step grandchildren and spouses, Stephanie and Tim Bullins, Jill and Brad Wood and Brandon DeWitt and Jeremy DeWitt; six step great-grandchildren, Alex Bullins, Claudie Wood, Mackenzie Bullins, Allie Wood, Jaden Wright and Jake Wright; a sister, Irene Bectol; a special friend, Hazel Helton; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, Nov. 20 at West Yadkin Baptist Church in Hamptonville with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Dennis Bell and the Rev. Grady Trivette officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to West Yadkin Baptist Church Christmas Drama, Highway 21, Hamptonville, NC 27020.

Charles Irie Funk

Charles Irie Funk, age 85, of Galax, Va., died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Dec. 19, 1922 in Grayson County, Va. to the late Arthur and Flora Bourne Funk. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Hudson; three sisters; and two brothers.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty L. Leonard of Galax; one son-in-law, Ronnie Hudson of Ennice; one sister, Hazel Morrison of North Carolina; one brother, John Funk of Norfolk, Va.; six grandchildren and spouses, Debbie and Eldon Edwards, Charles and Patricia Leonard, Jimmy and Linda Leonard, John and Melissa Leonard, DeeDee and Scott Bedsaul, Lynn and Paul Creed; several great-grandchildren; three step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 25 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial in Ballard cemetery. The Rev. James Cowley officiated.

Johnnie Crouse

John McCray ?Johnnie? Crouse, age 75, of Mount Airy, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. He was the son of the late George Washington and Nancy Lyons Crouse. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Rowe.

He is survived by his wife, Kaye Smith Crouse of the home; four children and a spouse, Lonnie and Cindy Crouse of Chesterfield, Va., Kathy Mudd of Virginia, Elizabeth Lundquist of Quinton, Va. and Carl Crouse of State Road; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Ernest Crouse of Elkin; a sister, Rosalie Coggins of Chester, Va.; three stepchildren, Lee Wright of Germanton, Chad Wright of South Carolina and Winferd Wright of Winston-Salem; nine step grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 23 at Saddle Mountain Union Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Billy Dean Adams

Billy Dean Adams, age 77, of Piney Creek, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008 at his residence. He was born Nov. 13, 1931 in Mouth of Wilson, Va. to the late Harrison and Mae Hill Adams. He is survived by his wife, Louise Halsey Adams; two sons, Jerry Adams of Knoxville, Tenn. and Larry Adams of Piney Creek; three brothers and sisters-in-law, H.P. and Musetta Adams, Charles Ray and Judy Adams and Donald Joe and Sue Adams, all of Mouth of Wilson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jean Wagg of Mouth of Wilson and Anna Mae and Gerald Henderson of Troutdale, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 23 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with burial in Piney Creek cemetery. The Rev. Doug Halsey officiated. Military rites were conducted by Grayson County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7726. Memorial contributions may be made to the Piney Creek Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Julia Rash

Julia Torrence Oliver Rash, age 90, of Todd, died Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008 at Margate Health and Rehab Center. She was born on Jan. 11, 1918 in Ashe County to the late Sherman and Donia Lewis Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Vernie Rash. She is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Gene and Betty Rash of Lansing, Jack and Dawna Rash of Clemmons, Lewis Rash, Herb and Barb Rash, all of West Jefferson and Tony Rash of Todd; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Irene Loggins of Piney Creek, Maxine and Clyde Farrington of Creston, Sue and Jim Rash and Glenda Rash, all of West Jefferson; one sister, Mattie Lewis of West Jefferson; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, Nov. 14 at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Rash cemetery. The Rev. Rhonda Rash and the Rev. Bluferd Eldreth officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon’s, P.O. Box 993, West Jefferson, NC 28694.

Carrie Ham Mullis

Carrie Ham Mullis, age 78, of Sparta, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008 at her home. She was born May 14, 1930 in Ashe County to the late Carl and Lockie Stike. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Mullis; and a son, John Wayne Mullis. She is survived by five sons and three daughters-in-law, Roger and Marie Mullis of Laurel Springs, David Mullis of Jefferson, Robert and Barbara Mullis, Mason Mullis, all of Sparta and Odel and Rita Taylor of North Wilkesboro; two sisters, Bonnie Parsons and Virginia Parsons, both of Sparta; one brother, Rufus Ham of Glade Creek; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 18 at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson with burial in Turner cemetery. The Rev. Lloyd Day, the Rev. J.D. Walton and the Rev. Dewitt C. Bottomley

Dewitt C. Bottomley, age 83, of Yadkinville and formerly of Ennice, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at his home after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 28, 1924 in Ennice to the late Coy and Della Edwards Higgins Bottomley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in from 1942 to 1943 during World

War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Zane Gray Bottomley; a brother, Tracy Bottomley; and two stepbrothers, Bert Higgins and Dean Higgins.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maxine Cain Bottomley of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Wendy Bottomely and Michael and Kathie Bottomley, all of Sparta, Tenn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Joe Gwyn of Mount Airy; five grandchildren and spouses, Denise Omartian of California, Kimberly and Don Riddle, Brian and Sonya Marion, all of North Carolina, Jeff Bottomley of Arizona and Christopher Stine of the U.S. Marine Corps; five great-grandchildren, Blake Omartian, Cedar Bottomley, Cheyenne Bottomley, Chole Marion and Ainsley Marion; and one sister, Wretha Geneva Carico.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Nov. 11 at Gentry Family Funeral Services Chapel in Yadkinville with burial in Yadkin Memorial Gardens. Dr. Hubert Wishon officiated. Memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Valley Hospice, 201 Technology Lane, Suite 100, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
