Fred Hampton, age 83, of Sparta, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. He was born Sept. 15, 1927 to the late Ray and Bessie Hampton. He served in the military in Germany during the Korean War. Most of his life he farmed and operated the Purina Feed Store in Sparta.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Edwards Hampton of the home; one brother and sister-in-law, Wade and Virginia Hampton of Sparta; one niece and spouse, Robin and Jimmy Bugielski of Sparta; two nephews and a spouse, Randy and Benita Hampton and David Hampton, all of Sparta; and many other special nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 13 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery.

Artie Preston Coleman, age 80, of Randleman and formerly of Ennice, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 at his home. He was born June 27, 1930 to the late Pearl and Vestor Coleman in Ennice. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vena Ree Harrison; an infant brother; a son, Marty Lee Coleman; and a daughter, Sharon Annette Coleman. He was a member of Little Pine Church and was a master banjo player.
He is survived by a daughter, Geraldine Coleman Adams; a son, Jamie Lee Coleman; five sisters, Doris Lee White, Ula May Hall, Norma Jean Auman, Jackie Wagoner and Kathy Lynn Honeycutt; his former wife, Darlene Coleman; four grandchildren, Amanda Adams Johnson, Brandy Adams Cox, Marty Preston Coleman and Kinsey Coleman; two great-grandchildren, Peyton Lee Johnson and Ryen Kaylyn Cox; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was conducted Monday, June 13 at Uwharrie Baptist Church in Archdale with Pastor Doug Byrd and Pastor Steve Marine officiating.
Lessie Mae Bowers Brown, age 82, of Galax, Va., died Monday, June 6, 2011 at her home. She was born Feb. 8, 1929 in Grayson County, Va. to the late Lawton S. and Della Smith Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Camet Eugene Brown Sr.; a sister, Frances Bowers
Sawyers; and five brothers, Samuel Bowers, James ?Did? Bowers, Robert ?Boogie? Bowers, Arnold ?Buckum? Bowers and Hobert Bowers.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Betty and Charlie Dean Lowe Sr. of Lowgap, Linda L. and Lester Vaught, Norma Jean and Eddie Chambers, all of Galax and Margaret and Johnny Poe of Piney Creek; one son, Camet ?Gene? Brown Jr. of Summerfield; seven grandchildren, Jennifer McMillan, Angie Haynes; Dee McMillan, Delena McMillan Stamper, Tammy Lowe Adams, Junior Lowe and Payton Vaught; 10 great-grandchildren, Katie Adams, Jacob Adams, Jada Lowe, Trevor Lowe, Bryan Oakley, Nick Sharpe, Abby Keesler, Aaron Stamper, Brady Vaught and Payton Vaught Jr.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Minnie Lee and Virgil Cox of Gibsonville and Shelby Jean Edwards of Galax; three half-sisters, Mary Ann Alley, Brenda Sue Spence and Janie Lou Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, June 9 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel in Galax with burial in Monta Vista cemetery. Jack Mooring officiated.
Albert Ander Wagoner, age 63, of Galax, Va., died Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He was born Dec. 31, 1947 to the late Sarah and Quincy Wagoner in Wilkes County.
He is survived by his wife, Laura Bryant Wagoner of the home; one brother, Cranford Wagoner of Wilkes County; one sister and brother-in-law, Susie and Robert Fender of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 7 at New Covenant Church in Ennice with burial in the church cemetery. Pastor Phil Edwards officiated.
Lorena Sullivan Vincent, age 96, of Sparta and formerly of Greenville, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at Alleghany Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. She was born in Washington County to Garfield Sullivan and Mary Alice Overton Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Joseph Vincent. She was a member of First Christian Church in Greenville.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia V. and David Jackson of Sparta; a granddaughter and spouse, Leslie J. and Bryan Johnson of Lenoir; a step-grandson, Lawton Jackson of Palm Beach, Fla.; a step-granddaughter and spouse, Lyra J. and Derek Pickett of Hendersonville; seven great-grandsons, Ethan Johnson, Graham Johnson, Ashton Zeller, Reid Zeller, Patrick Zeller, Brendon Zeller and Bailey Zeller.

USAF Retired Chief Master Sergeant Andrew McKnight, age 83, of Goldsboro, died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Samuel and Edith McKnight of Glade Valley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, David McKnight; and two brothers, Edwin McKnight and Zane McKnight.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Juanita Higgins McKnight; a son and daughter-in-law, Doyle Andrew and Kelly McKnight of Goldsboro; a daughter, Debbie McKnight Smith of LaGrange; two sisters, Lucille Irwin and Morene Blevins, both of Glade Valley; and five grandsons, Andrew Stephen McKnight of Greenville, Samuel Eric Smith, Benjamin Preston Smith, both of LaGrange and Daniel Bryan McKnight and Michael David McKnight, both of Raleigh.

Millan Gambill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Ellis Hiatt Lineback and Clayton Rector; and two brothers, Arthur Gambill and Dale Gambill.

Velma Trawick Hopkins, age 89, of Glade Valley, died Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was born May 4, 1922 to the late William and Mary Trawick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hopkins; two sisters, Mary Agnes McColl and Mervelle Sanderlin; and three brothers, David Trawick, Poole Trawick and Terry Trawick.
She is survived by one daugher, Mary Callahan of Glade Valley; a granddaughter and spouse, Melissa and Lt. Andrew Lewis of Kapolei, Hawaii; three sisters, Janet Woods of Virginia Beach, Va., Charlotte Castine of Norfolk, Va. and Ann Watson of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews.

Pansy Violet Hawks, age 71, of Galax, Va., died Monday, May 30, 2011 at her home. She was born in Galax on Nov. 22, 1939 to the late Halford and Alma Sue Phillips. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Aldean ?Dean? Hawks.

Nancy Lou Finney, age 90, of Sparta, died Monday, May 30, 2011 at her residence. She was born Oct. 5, 1920 in Marion, Va. to the late Wiley and Ann Hendrix. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Earnest ?Dick? Finney; a son, Jimmy Finney; and a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and David Duncan.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Betty Finney-Moxley of Sparta; three grandchildren and spouses, Jamie Finney and friend Melissa of Hamptonville, Aaron and Ramona Finney of Glade Valley and Gary and Crystal Finney of Sparta; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Finney and Morgan Finney; two special caregivers, Diane Moxley and Teresa Dowell; and several nieces and nephews.
