Isaiah LaKeit McMillian, age 21, of Galax, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011. He was born in Galax on July 14, 1990 to Elmo Phipps Johnson and Tanya Denise McMillian. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elmo and Kattie Johnson and Sylvester McMillian.
He is survived by his mother, Tanya McMillian of Champagne, Ill.; his father, Elmo Phipps Johnson of Painesville, Ohio; one brother, Joshua Lamont Smith of Sparta; one sister, Victoria Rashon McMillian of Champagne; two half-sisters, Mara Johnson of Radford, Va. and Jade Johnson of Wythville, Va.; three uncles Jeffrey Lynn McMillian of Winston-Salem, Chad McMillian and Brad McMillian, both of Galax; a friend of the family, Sassie Christley; his great-grandparents, Frances McMillian of Independence, Va. and Sena Rose Jackson of Elk Creek, Va.; and several, cousins, great-uncles, aunts and friends.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 19 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Chapel in Independence with burial in Oak Grove cemetery. The Rev. Dayle McKinney officiated.

The Rev. Russell Allen Mabe, age 56, of Hays and formerly of Alleghany County, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011 in Alleghany County. He was born Dec. 2, 1955 in Alleghany County to Grace Jones Mabe and the late Coy Elbert Mabe. He was a pastor of Osborne Memorial Baptist Church in the Turkey Knob community, on the board of Cranberry cemetery, and was a member of the North Wilkes High School Athletic Boosters. Prior to becoming a full-time minister and farmer, he worked for Flav-O-Rich for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Nance Mabe of the home; two sons, Jonathan Allen Mabe and Stephen Nance Mabe, both of the home; his mother, Grace Jones Mabe of Laurel Springs; one sister and brother-in-law, Patsy M. and LeLand Epting of Newberry, S.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Don Lee and Sandra Mabe of Laurel Springs and Spencer and Betty Mabe of Clermont, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 19 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Cranberry cemetery in Laurel Springs.

Robert Earl Gantt, age 73, of Glade Valley, died Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at his residence. He was born May 3, 1938 in Harrisburg, Pa. to the late Bruce and Lizabeth Patton Gantt. He retired from Amp Inc/Tyco and served in the Navy Reserve. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Basil Gantt; and a sister, Doris Zeiders.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Elaine March Gantt of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Darren and Juanita Gantt of Camp Hill, Pa.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen G. and Greg Fagg of Pfafftown; a sister, Eleanor Gantt Wevodau of Westerville, Ohio; and two grandchildren and spouses, Shannon Ellen and Andrew Shore of Mooresville and Wesley Alexander and Hope Boyles of Winston-Salem.

Arzie Cecil Richardson, age 86, of Independence, Va. and formerly of Alleghany County, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, at Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence. He was born Jan. 22, 1925 in Alleghany County to the late Columbus and Cornelia Raynolds Richardson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Wingate Richardson. He owned and operated Wingate’s Store in Independence for many years.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Bob Leonard of Independence; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Nancy Richardson of Saltville, Va.; a granddaughter and spouse, Sarah and Donnie Snow of Independence; a step-granddaughter, Sarah Jones; and two step-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were conducted Dec. 10 at Independence cemetery in Independence with the Rev. David Osborne officiating.

Herman McMillan, age 78, of Piney Creek, died Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at Alleghany Care and Rehabilitation Center in Sparta. He was born Jan. 16, 1933 in Davie County to the late Ed and Ennice Edwards McMillan.
He is survived by a host of friends at Alleghany Care and Rehabilitation Center; the Piney Creek Community and his church family from Macedonia Baptist Church and White Plains Baptist Church.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 13 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with burial in White Plains Baptist Church cemetery in Twin Oaks.
Margaret Ann Perry McGrady, age 69, of Piney Creek, died December 10, 2011 at Alleghany Memorial Hospital. She had courageously fought liver cancer for three years. She was born July 29, 1942 in Wilkesboro, as the first child of Guy Thomas Perry, Sr. and Edna Warden Perry. She graduated from Piney Creek High School in 1960 and attended Appalachian State Teacher’s College for five quarters. She married Frank McGrady in 1963. She followed her husband in the Army for a short time before returning to Piney Creek to help run the family dairy farm. Shortly after returning home she gave birth to her son Thomas in 1965, and three and one-half years later, her daughter Nancy.
She and her father successfully ran the dairy, until his death in 1992. After the farm was sold, she worked at Bassett Walker until closure and then returned to school to finish a two-year degree in a teaching assistant program at Wilkes Community College. At the end of her career she was privileged to work for the Alleghany County School System at Sparta Elementary School. She was an active member of Piney Creek United Methodist Church where she was a dedicated servant to our Lord and a friend to the Piney Creek community. In previous years she had also been active in the Eastern Star and the Dirty Fingers Garden Club. Margaret was a devoted and loving mother and daughter.
She was widowed in 1974 and raised her two children on her own and was instrumental in raising her two grandsons. She actively cared for her parents in their declining years. She selflessly put others first, often neglecting herself.
She is survived by her son, Frank Thomas McGrady and wife, Judy, of the home; her daughter, Nancy Lynn McGrady and friend Michael Burchette of Piney Creek; two grandsons, Shane Fender of Wilkesboro and Perry Fender of Piney Creek; two step-granddaughters and spouses Kathy and Bobby Chace of Bunnell, Fla. and Kristy and Rex Smith of Kings Mountain; two step-great-grandsons, Chris and Cole Smith, both of Kings Mountain; her mother, Edna Warden Perry,of Alleghany Care and Rehab in Sparta; her brother, Guy Thomas “Tom” Perry of Phenix City, Ala.; two sisters Helen P. Reedy of Piney Creek and Jean P. Girtman of Chapel Hill; her brothers-in-law, Harold Reedy, Glenn Girtman, Joe and Mike McGrady of China Grove, and Marvin McGrady of Landis; her aunt, Ella Jean Perry of Bel Air, Md.; her nieces and a spouse, Becky and Randy Crouse, Lisa Jarvis, both of Sparta, Tammy Scott of South Carolina, Becky Comer of Whiteford, Md., Misty Anderson Resendiz, of Wilkesboro; her nephews and a spouse, Mitchell and Brandi Reedy of Sparta and Brandon Anderson of Wilkesboro; her first cousins, Hugh Warden Halsey, Pauline Jolly, both of Glade Valley, Katy Tucker of Laurel Springs and Linda Ann Gallion, Darlington, Md.; and a special friend and neighbor, Sue Fender of Piney Creek. She also leaves her beloved cats to the trusted care of Thomas and Judy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank McGrady; her father, Guy Thomas Perry, Sr.; a brother Arthur David Perry; an infant brother, Alben Barkley Perry; and nieces Dorothy Jean Perry and Ruth Ann McGrady Anderson.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 14 at Piney Creek United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Clifton Wade Evans, age 70, of Winston-Salem and formerly of Alleghany County, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011. He was the son of the late Elder William Walter and Hattie Elizabeth Andrews Evans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Iva Mae Clodfelter; and one brother, Roger Evans.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Brenda Evans; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Timothy and Carla Evans and Greg Evans, all of Delaware; one stepson, Michael Jones; one stepdaughter and spouse, Tammy and Brian Lewis; one brother and sister-in-law, Louis and June Evans of Marion, Va.; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Ellen Miles of Winston-Salem, Ann Petty of Maryland, Ruth and Bill Selway of Smyrna, Del., Wanda and Joe Wyatt and Pat and Randy Dillard, all of Sparta; two grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

James Earl Edwards, age 71, of Clemmons and formerly of Sparta, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Forsyth County June 22, 1940 to the late Homer Allen and Florence Arnold Edwards. Before joining the U.S. Navy, he attended Wake Forest University. He was of the Moravian faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Skye Edwards.
He is survived by a son, James Earl Edwards II of Orlando, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Don Raines of Clemmons and Joanna and Gary Penission of East Lansing, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Tyler Edwards, Heather Edwards, Austin Raines, Chad Raines, Sean Raines, Skye Penission and Marco Penission; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph and Gelene Edwards of Kingsport, Tenn. and Russell and Mary Jane Edwards of Suwannee, Ga.

Dinah Mae Eller Bare, age 65, of Sparta, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2011 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born on Jan. 2, 1946 in Grayson County, Va. to the late William Noah and Clyde Church Eller. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Luke Eller and L.J. Eller; and three sisters, Ethel Hamm, Verda Howell and Octavia Billings.
She is survived by her husband, J.C. Bare of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda and Greg Pruitt of Mouth of Wilson, Va., Benita and Brandon Osborne and Benicia and Benjamin Kennedy, all of Sparta; two grandchildren, Brittany Pruitt and Ashley Pruitt; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Bill and Freda Eller and Pete Johnson, all of Roanoke, Va.; one sister, Anna Lee Grinstead of Chilhowie, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Debra Sue Horton Varner, age 54, of Greensboro, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2011 at her residence. She was born Aug. 3, 1957 in Ashe County. She was preceded in death by her mother, Susie Hill Horton Perdue.
She is survived by one brother, Kenneth Randall Horton of Gibsonville; two aunts, Sadie Maines of Piney Creek and Bronda Lee Horton of Ennice; and one uncle, Gerald Horton of Galax, Va.
Funeral services were conducted Dec. 1 at Mount Zion Methodist Church in Piney Creek with burial in the church cemetery.
Grandview Memorial Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
